Hard Metals and Steels

Hard Metals and Steels

One of the research fields at MCL is the understanding and improvement of production, shaping and application of industrial manufacturing tools made of high strength materials such as WC-Co hard metals and steels.

We use experimentally parameterized and validated finite element models as a way to investigate the complex load situation of e.g. milling tools or (fine) blanking punches and dies. Quantitative knowledge about the tool loads with a focus on the cutting edges region allows for the design of advanced experiments that mimic this load situations in the laboratory. For example, the buildup of tensile residual stresses triggered by local plastic deformation of a cutting edge can significantly change the mean stress acting at a cyclically loaded tool edge. Also, the real-time diagnosis of the current damage state of metalworking tools using tool machine tool sensor data to enable maintenance on demand (Industrie 4.0) is one of our current research areas.
