ECOSolder @MCL

Young and motivated - we may introduce our 3 new PhD students: These are Charlotte Cui, Nadine Buchebner and Wolfgang Flachberger. The three are working on their PhD theses in the ECOSolder project.

Soldering is one of the most common interconnection techniques in microelectronics. As a result, tons of harmful lead - on which soldering is currently based - are processed every year. The aim of the work is to develop a method kit for the use of ecologically and economically sustainable lead-free soldering materials based on tin-silver-copper (SAC) alloys. In the project we will combine the characterization of microstructure and material parameters with advanced modeling/simulation approaches.

Charlotte will focus on 2D/3D characterization methods investigating morphology/ crystallography/ chemistry from mm to nm range with e.g. micro-XCT, nano-FESEM and nano-FIB-SEM methods, whereas Nadine will assess mechanical material properties at room- and application relevant- temperatures to determine (in-situ) the local damage initiation mechanisms (voids, delamination, cracks). Wolfgang will combine the correlated microstructure and material properties by modeling / simulation based on RVE-FEM in conjunction with mean-field thermo-kinetic modeling and crystal plasticity.

We wish you fun@work, much success and great results!
